1. Tell us about yourself?
My name is Jannah Whalley, I’ve just turned 24. I was born and grew up in Johannesburg South Africa. I studied photography while assisting a professional photographer after I finished school.
2. When did you first pick up a camera and fall in love with it?
I have always loved cameras, every school camp I would take a disposable film camera along with me and take pictures of everything. When my mom bought herself a digital camera I quickly commandeered it and that was that, I was hooked! But the moment I realised that I wanted to do this as a career was on my first wedding shoot. I was substituting for a photographer’s usual assistant and I had no idea what I was doing. Then I took this one photo, and everything just worked together for a second – I knew that this was what I wanted to keep doing for as long as I could.
3. Why do you love Photography?
I love being able to capture moments of life, things that will make you smile or tear up years down the line. I feel honoured when people ask me to help them capture these precious moments.
4. Do you have a memorable photo you have taken. All of your photos are amazing!!
I have many, so it’s hard to choose…
5. What excites you about taking a photo?
The opportunity to create something that will bring joy to someone, and that moment when everything just goes right and you get that shot that makes you think “this is why I do this”
6. What would you be if you weren’t a photographer?
I’d be a florist or an art teacher – something creative.
7. Has the UAE culture inspired you?
I love the mix of cultures here, the patterns and traditions make every shoot such a visually exciting opportunity.
8. What gets you up in the morning?
A strong cup of tea and 3 alarms, I am definitely a night person. But really it’s that I know that where I am, and what I am doing, is exactly where I should be right now.
9. What do you love to photograph? Weddings? Events? People?
My favourite thing to shoot is a wedding, it’s the best day of the couples life and I get to share that with them, it’s a privilege that I still don’t take lightly.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I am not sure – probably somewhere beautiful with a camera and a smile on my face.
